How to Balance Being Mother and
a Businesswoman Being a mother means wearing many different hats often at the same time. At any given time, you are the guidance counselor, cheerleader at a game, or mediator during a dispute. On top of that, you are a wife, friend, daughter and sister. Now, you want to start your own business. How do you balance being a mother and a businesswoman? Here are five ways to achieve and maintain that balance: 1) Schedule Your Time: You need to schedule time for all the important aspects of your life. Schedule time for your spouse and children; schedule time for your business, hobbies and other interests. To do this, purchase a planner or set up a scheduler on your computer and assign certain periods of time to particular categories in your life such as family, business, and anything else in your life. Once you have your schedule arranged, stick to it! Do everything that you can to maintain your schedule. Your schedule will help your days go more smoothly and will help you maintain your balance. 2) Network with Other Mothers and Businesswomen: Have formal and informal get-togethers with other women who are in similar situations as you. Join the local Chamber of Commerce or form your own forum for businesswomen. Join groups geared towards working mothers so that you can not only have a sounding board for your ideas, but also have a support system when you go through a tough time with your business. 3) Take Time for Yourself: Make sure to reserve time for yourself. If you are not in balance, your family and business will not be in balance either. Spend time by yourself with no distractions. Treat yourself; you could go see a movie, go get a spa treatment or any other way to reward yourself for a job well done. You could take time for yourself by exercising. Whether working out in a gym, at home or outside, exercise gives you a chance to clear your mind and enables you to come up with ways to improve your business and your family life. Exercise helps your body relax and get rid of stress so that you can face any problems that you may have in your life. 4) Get the Support of Your Family: Starting your own business, especially if you are still working full-time at a job, will require sacrifices from you as well as from your family. Before you start the business, have a meeting with your family members detailing to them what you are going to do and how much time you will commit to it. This meeting is the time to delegate certain tasks that can be done by other family members. By having all the family members in agreement in the beginning, the support will remain strong even when you encounter problems later on. 5) Be Flexible: Above all else, be flexible. Even when you have a plan in place and you have done everything that you can to establish the balance, unexpected circumstances will come up. A family crisis will occur, certain delegated tasks will not be done or you may have to work late in the night to accomplish a project on time. Though the ideal would be to stick to your schedule, there are times when you need to go with the flow. Sometimes, you will need to revamp your schedule completely. Perhaps an aspect of your business, such as marketing, is not working as you expected. Maybe you need to change your marketing plan and use a different approach. Your business, just like life itself, is not stagnant, but always moving and changing. You need to be flexible so that you can handle the turns that you may find along the way. Congratulations on taking the first steps to having your own business. Hopefully, these five ways will help you as you continue on your journey.
